Squeaky Clean with Jojoba Oil.

Brush care is something I cant stress enough to my customers. I don’t want to think about the amount of times I’ve sold a brush just to be met with a blank stare at the suggestion of brush cleaner. Cleaning your brushes, whether you are a professional artist or an “I only wear makeup on weekends” type-a-gal, is paramount. Bacteria, dead skin cells, dirt and sebum all build up in our brushes... and we then wipe that on our face without a thought! Imagine if you never washed your toothbrush after you used it. Same thing.

Now that I have sufficiently grossed you all out, I’ll give you a run down on how to deep cleanse your brushes. Not to be confused with a quick clean, deep cleansing should be done every one to two weeks, and if you use your brushes professionally, every time you have a makeup job. As the name suggests, deep cleansing really gets all the grime from your brushes and it also conditions them. Most good quality brushes are real hair and I bet you paid a lot for them, so to keep them staying soft and in tip top condition try following the steps below.

Oh and just a little note, in this tutorial I am using the MAC conditioning brush cleanser but I also like to use a cheap alternative, such as Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo (you know, the yellow one!), which I think is just as good.Because my brushes are real hair and were a large investment I like to give them a treatment every 6 weeks using Jojoba oil. Lucky for me, I received this oil from Echo Life as part of my goody bag when I attended the Wellness WA POBM event so I didn’t have to purchase it, but you can find it at your supermarket for around 12 dollars.

1. Start by pouring the oil into the palm of your hand or into a small bowl. Dip a tiny amount onto the brush head and work it into the bristles. Remember this is an OIL, so apply sparingly!

2. Leave your brushes for 5-10 minuets while the oil sinks in. While you are waiting run a small warm bowl of water or set up near a sink. If I have a lot of brushes to clean I will use a bowl in front of the TV and change the water when it gets murky.

3. Dip your brush head into the water being careful to not immerse the head under the water. This is important as the glue will loosen and the hairs will fall out if you do! Pour a small amount of your cleanser onto the palm of your hand and swirl the brush head until you get a lather going. Work the cleaner though the brush with a little bit of water from the bowl until the suds disappear and the brush feels clean.

4. Gently squeeze the excess water from your brush and push the bristles back into shape. Lay the brushes flat on a bench with the brush heads hanging over the edge. This is another important step as the brushes will get moldy if you dry them on the bench. I also like to make sure the shape of the bristles are perfect as they are drying and I check on them every few hours.

This all sounds like a lot of hooha to clean some brushes, and I understand that not many people have the time to follow all these steps. If this is the case, pop to any cosmetics store and grab a brush cleaning spray. I like the Mecca Cosmetica Conditioning brush cleaner $22.
Spray the product onto a tissue and wipe the brush until it runs clean. If you choose to use this method of cleaning pleaasseee try and deep cleanse your brushes once a month. Your brushes, your face and I will all love you!

Perth Online Beauty Media event.

Things have been quiet around here. Partly because I am enjoying my new busy work schedule, but I have also been spending a bit of time over at Wellness WA; the West Australian based wellbeing website that I like to write for. Recently Wellness WA hosted Perth’s first Online Beauty Media event, which saw a collective of Perth’s online beauty mavens gather at Djurra Day spa for a day of pampering, tweeting and learning. I was so excited to hear that the event was being held at Djurra as I have always longed to enter the beautiful (100 year!!) old building.

As a prerequisite of coming to the event we needed to bring with us three beauty products we don’t use, to swap with another three products we will use at the end of the event. I thought this was a great idea as it was a good talking point for us all and a chance to pass on some of my bulging makeup kit! During the day the lovely ladies from Djurra gave us mini spa treatments, while we feasted on food supplied by The Raw Kitchen and discussed all things beauty and media. Towards the end of the meet we listened to an informative chat with natropath, Adele Plumridge and received our monstrous goodie bags. Our treats were provided by over thirty generous sponsors which I will list at the end of this post.

I think the pictures speak for themselves, we were treated to an amazing day and I personally have come away from the event feeling rejuvenated and inspired. I just got home from the launch night of Perth's WA Designer Boutique, a cute pop up store in the heart of Perth city. Perth Fashion Festival 2011

If you are a regular reader of Perth blogs such as The Velvet Bow, Peanut Moonbeam Knickers and Heart and Bleeker you would have realised by now that we are in the midst of the Perth Fashion Festival. PFF runs for two weeks and not only showcases some of Western Australia's premier labels but also supports many up and coming designers.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the VIP opening night featuring Aurelio Costarella, which was held at a rotating restaurant high up in Perth's sky. I was asked to do the makeup for a few women heading to the VIP night so unfortunately in the rush I was unable to capture any shots, but lucky for me my friend and photographer extraordinaire, Tessa, took these beautiful images of the night. We were treated to a stunning view of the city, while models dressed in Costarella sauntered through the crowd. Unfortunately due to work commitments I wont be able to attend many shows this year, so for full coverage be sure to pay one of the blogs above a visit.

Oh and too the event I wore my black silk Opening Ceremony dress with my Make Believe necklace.

Neuw Dress.

This week S surprised me with a pretty dress from Australian label NEUW. The scalloped hem, the off grey wash, and the shiny buttons all up the back, add up to a perfect summer staple. This is my second dress from NEUW's Spring Summer line, the collection consists of greys burgundies and mustard tones, all favourites of mine.

Today I took my new frock for a stroll around East Perth and then out to brunch. Oh and I also teamed the dress with some new OPI nail varnish (road house blues) and my very old school back pack.

Rings and Bangs.

So a while ago I promised a picture of my new Lotus Mendes rings which I had initially discovered in a woman's magazine one night. Unfortunately for me, im terrible at online shopping, and the rings did not fit. Sad and ringless I contacted Victoria Cheatham, the designer for LM and she happily exchanged my rings for a new size. While waiting for said rings, I decided to cut and colour my hair and I'm now the proud owner of bangs!

My bright lip colour was inspired by Kit cosmetics Colour Fiesta range which im in the middle of reviewing for Wellness WA. I'll be sure to let you all know once its up.

Hotchpotch.

As I seem to be blogging on a once a month basis I thought I would do a little photo hotchpotch of my activities, rather than painstakingly list each and every little thing I have been doing in the weeks that have passed. Also I have really wanted to use the word, ‘hotchpotch’ in a sentence lately and now I have. YAY!

1. Tattoo

I have had this design in my mind for around 2 years now. Unable to translate my image onto paper myself, a friend of mine sketched this up for me as a guide. I took it into a tattoo parlour yesterday and i have appointment in September. My Gypsy girl will have pretty pink cheeks and colourful roses surrounding her. Oh my!

2. Work

Work has been occupying my mind of late. I have been setting up my business, creating my website, trying to book regular work, stocking up my kit and also working for Bobbi Brown, there is allot to think about!

This shot is from my parents property in York, im constantly scouting for locations to shoot at, and I would love to drag some models out here one time! Yes that is a flowing creek behind the tree too. How magical!

3. Being totes cool

The delightful Camilla from Girls are made from Pepsi has featured me on her hilarious blog this week. Run and check it out.

4. Aunty O

Between jobs I usually spend allot of time at home. During these periods I have become acquainted with Aunty O. Aunty and I spend allot of time crying over the sad guests she interviews and talking about how we are powerful women.

That photo montage wasn't too unbearable was it? This is essentially my life at the moment (aside from the being cool bit, that was just funny). Its strange not having a 9-5 job any more and sometimes I feel like im going crazy from the lack of consistency but I suppose it leaves more time for the finer things in life, like day time TV!

Hello all! Here are some behind the scenes shots from our Little Gracie Spring/Summer 2011/12 Campaign. We took three beautiful girls up to the hills for a day of frolicking, prancing and shivering (it was FREEZING today!) The campaign will feature a video clip as well as still images from the day, and with a French Garden, peach picnic rug and flowers galore you are all in for a treat!

Next week I will be working on a test shoot with Claire from Stolen from Grandma and then hopping on a plane to Sydney for a Bobbi Brown training week. Oh and Ebony, the designer for Little Gracie is currently in Paris so a big huge thankyou needs to go to Claire for organising this in her absence!

Over the last two weeks I have been preoccupied by my end of college exams. Two sets of practical and two sets of theory makes for a busy busy girl!

But making my exam time that little bit easier is a ray of sunshine by the name of Lonely 8-Bit Heroes.

Lonely 8-Bit Heroes is an eclectic Perth clothing label created by the darling Zoe Trotman. Zoe came to my rescue last week when I was desperately searching for an outfit to use for my practical exam which is Cirque Du Soliel themed. All of Zoe’s items were perfect for my exams and I decided on these darling Donut leggings, custom designed shoes and a silk print from her new line.

There isn’t really much I can say about the label. It’s insane, and I know a lot of you wouldn’t be able to incorporate Zoe’s items into your wardrobe but I urge you to consider it! I cant believe I am following my last post with yet another Iphone picture, but when the sun goes down at 5pm and you don’t have a flash for your DLSR, seriously whatisagalsupposedtodo!?

So yes. This was taken on my phone but I just HAD to show you all that I cut and died my hair today. I was hankering for a bright, crazy, very on trend pastel shade, but as I am I am currently working with Bobbi Brown I needed something a little more subdued, enter a bit of natural balayage. As this is my third try at balayage I suppose am an old hat at the trend. Yet this time around I have gone for a darker base with more of a caramel highlight through the ends which i hope will work well in winter.

I have an ear infection at the moment (ew) and even the sound of my typing is sending stabbing pains through my head. Im off to make pasta and stick cotton wool in my ear.

A nice cheery Iphone picture to show you all that contrary to popular believe, I do still get dressed in the morning and YES, I do still leave the house. I don’t think you can see very well in this hasty Iphone shot but S bought me some new shoes the other day. They are from Wittner and I feel like a cowgirl when I wear them. They are leather and oh so comfortable, a winter staple I do think. They are called the 'Fernando' if you would like to buy them too.

I have had some exciting things happen recently that have been keeping me from here, in time i will be able to talk more about it but for now lets just say im not making burgers any more!

Friends.

For years I have had friends drift in and out of my life. When I was younger it was hard for me to let go of some friends, thinking we were destined to know each other for ever and that I had a special connection with that person. But as I grew older I came to realise that some people are meant to be around for a brief while, to teach you something new, to help you build memories and then to move on.

Amongst these fleeting friends are true friends. The friends you only see every few years but you can still pick up where you left off with ease. The ones that remember every thing about you, and know your own mother as well as they know you. My English friend Amaya falls into that category. After 6 years of being apart we were recently reunited for three wonderful weeks. I thought those weeks would be spent getting to know each other again, but there was no need. We slipped straight back into old habits and old conversations. We spent our time drinking a lot of wine, taking too many pictures and arguing like siblings.

The house is quiet now as Amaya has moved on to her next destination. I miss her, but im still finding traces of her around the house (you left your heels silly!), which make me smile and think that hopefully it won’t be another 6 years before we meet again.

Life has been hectic lately. Last time i wrote something of substance I was unemployed and desperate for a job to help pay the bills. Well I now have a job and I’m paying the bills. I have a position at a local restaurant, the hours are hectic and I’m sore at the end of the day, but I’m also happy that I’m doing something and earning some dough. Its weird, ive gone from earning the highest salary in my working life to the lowest and im still happy. It makes me think I should have taken this step years ago when my excuse was, “I don’t mind that I hate my job, I’m just happy making money.” S found this shirt in a pile of crap in our spare room. Its one of the souvenir pieces we got during our trip to New York and Ive pretty much lived in it this week. My birthday is coming up super fast and in the whirlwind that is life I actually forgot! I need to start planning an outfit…

A few behind the scenes pictures from a portfolio shoot i worked on yesterday. My darling model was only 14 (14!) and when she asked what to do in front of the camera i had to tell her to think and act evil. The second she stepped in front of the lens she morphed into the perfect nasty character, I was so proud of her! I can’t wait to see the final shots from the shoot, David Woolley knew exactly what i wanted and im sure he has produced some great pictures.

Last night we celebrated Little Gracie’s Second birthday and pop up store opening. It’s hard to believe Little Gracie has only turned 2; she has grown so much in such a short time! The VIP night was super fun, with cute waiter boys dressed by Pigeon Hole and life sized pictures from the A/W range hanging from the ceiling, and I must say, it was a proud moment for me to see something I worked on displayed so beautifully, for all of Subiaco to gander at!

Last Sunday there was a gaggle of girls prancing around Kings Park. Tottering on the grass in heels, snapping pictures with their huge lenses and eating cupcakes. People were asking if they were photographers, models or just plain kooky... but no, it was only Perth’s first Fashion Blogger Meet!

Recently there has been an influx of Perth based Fashion blogs (mine included) so Jessie from The Velvet Bow and I decided to host a Perth Fashion Blogger Meet. The meet was a great chance for us ladies to network and chat about all things blogging, something we cant really do with non blog friends!

I found a neat little woollen top to wear to the park; it had a scalloped neck line and went perfectly with my silk shorts from Witchery. I must also thank my little sister for creating the beautiful cupcakes for the event, they were delicious and went down a treat. Thanks again to every one who made the effort to come out despite the terrible weather, and i cant wait for our next meet up!

This weekend was super productive for me. Amongst dancing at the Laneway festival, working on a 5 hour wedding trial and doing homework; I also set my rates, created a Facebook page and “opened” April Rose Makeup for business. I have also included a small online portfolio of pictures which I have either taken myself or sourced from photographers. Glamour Makeup.

Just a little glimpse into what I have been doing lately. Each day that we have class we partner up and do a “look” on each other. That look includes creating the hair, producing the clothing and taking the photos for our portfolios. It’s a three hour process which I have really been enjoying.

I’m considering taking on more makeup work in the near future to help ease the strain on our dwindling bank balance. I wonder if there is enough interest or need out there at the moment for evening looks, ball looks, weddings etc. There is so much to consider when taking on this kind of work, so I think i will mull it over this weekend. Of course if I do go down this road, my beautiful readers will be the first to know!

I’m having trouble finding a part time job at the moment; I just need something to help pay the bills while I study. But even though we are pinching pennies we managed to allocate some dosh towards a new hair cut and colour. I decided to go back to brunette, I feel like my hair looks healthier when it’s a darker hue. My new hair has helped cheer me up a tad; it’s amazing what a slight change can do to your mood! Coastal Colours.

I forgot to show you all what I bought the other week! Meet my new Coastal Scents 88 colour palettes. I’m not going to write much about these as there are a million reviews about these palettes going around, (My favourite ones are over at The Lip Print) but I will share with you some bits of info I had trouble sourcing when I was researching these bad boys.

Ordering from Coastal Scents was fast, safe and easy. Don’t worry your pretty little head about it. Nothing was broken and I even received a sample.
The pigments (the strength and depth of colour) are amazing. Long lasting too.
The 88 palettes are smaller than anticipated; each shade is the size of an AU 5c piece.
The shimmer palette and the normal 88 palette are the same colours, as you can see from my swatch the golds are the same exept one is matte and one has a shimmer through it.
I highly recommend purchasing the 28 Neutral, warm palette, the shades are very versatile and they are also slightly larger in size.

The palettes have been a great addition to my kit and i reccomend them to any one who wants more than a few shades! Also if you are living in Perth, dont forget to RSVP for the Perth blogger meet. We are sending out invitations from Sunday onwards.

The line was as long as my arm.

This is what i wore the other night to get burgers in Leederville. Well that was the plan until we saw the line for the burger shop was around the corner and my car broke down. So in the end we ate pizza on the boot of the car until road side assistance came (thanks RAC!) The shorts im wearing were were purchased from American Apparel when i was in New York and they are a life saver in this heat. They feel light as a feather and can withstand hours of walking without being uncomfortable. My shirt warped in the wash and now has an asymmetrical hem, something that was unintentional but makes me like it even more. Oh, and I finally got a hair appointment with Peggy Sues. I can’t wait to release my hair from its top knot prison!

Carnations, Roses and Chrysanthemum’s. Oh My!

I have spoken about Little Gracie on here before, many times in fact. The designer, Ebony, is a friend of mine and she ever so nicely asked me do the makeup for her label, an opportunity that I am ever so grateful for!

This Thursday we shot her Spring/Summer Look book in front of a huge shrine of flowers, painstakingly created by Ebony and her little team of helpers (Hannah and Cam from All Of The Above Creative and us.) The overall look was very Seventies, with pastel shades on the eyes to match the pastel hues in garments.

As per usual I can’t show you the clothing until the line is released, but I can give you a little peek into the day’s activities. I would like to send out a big fat thankyou to my college friend for doing our model Phillipa’s hair, it turned out amazing!

Copious Amounts of Wine.

Dinner with old friends is such fun. We spent last night at an Italian restaurant in Mount Lawley and drank copious amounts of wine. I did a purple smoky eye for the occasion and wore my hair in its usual top knot. Until I get a hair appointment, that's how it’s staying! I need to try and study today, I feel guilty whenever i catch glimpse of my text book. Stupid text book.

Beauty School Drop Out.

Nope I have left my course, I just love Grease. I started yesterday and gosh I was nervous! I felt like I was starting boarding school all over again. Weird uniforms, new people, a new suburb… it was all very daunting!

For those who are new to this blog, I recently quit my full time job as a Personal Assistant and enrolled in a Makeup Diploma course. Yesterday I had a glimpse into how detailed the course will be and im a little scared but also very excited. The Diploma runs for 5 months and I will be creating all sorts of looks as well as learning Special Effects and Camouflage (blood and gore).

Amongst getting ready for school and trying to find work, I have been going to the beach (my beach bag cost me 7.50!), catching up with friends and family and cleaning the house until S gets home. Im turning into a house wife!

Flood Appeal.

By now most of you would know about the flooding that has taken over a large part of Queensland, one of our states on the East Coast of Australia. Countless homes have been lost, families have been torn apart and there is more flooding expected tonight.

Please help in any way you can by either visiting this site and donating, or offering well wishes to the people affected via Twitter and Facebook.

Girl Friday has just announced that $10 from every item purchased from her store this January will be donated to the flood relief fund.

This New Years i wore an outfit that comprised of items i had at home as well as two new purchases that i talked about here. I saw Tron Legacy earlier that week and it inspired my dark eye makeup for the night. We started our celebrations with a barbeque at the park and then moved on to a gig in town. Our night ended at 8 the next day, far far away from home and the local joggers found S and i very amusing as we trudged down the street looking for a cab! One thing that made me happy that morning was my makeup was still perfect... that’s a job well done.

New Years Eve

S and I made a choice to avoid the Boxing Day sales this year as we are still trying to save.

But on the way home from the city today I couldn’t resist a quick look in Wittner. Lucky for me, these heels were on sale for a measly 45 dollars. Can you believe it? So now I have the next piece for my New Years outfit. Hopefully I can get my bottoms sorted before Friday, It’s not like I can go pant less! These last few days have been so nice; we spent Boxing Day at a friend’s barbeque and today at the beach. I love holidays!

Christmas day was spent with S and his family eating copious amounts of food, drinking and swimming. It has been very hot here in Perth and wearing a face full of makeup really isn’t an option. My fail safe hot weather makeup usually comprises of a bright lippy, minimal foundation (but lots of concealer) a nude shadow on the lid to cover veins aaannndddd big bold brows.

Oh and big sunglasses usually help too!

Gorgeous Cosmetics.

This is where all my money is going lately. I'm in the process of stocking my kit and making sure my equipment is up to scratch before i start working full time as a makeup artist. Previously when i had jobs and clients i would use my own brush set that i had pieced together over the years. It was adequate but I wanted to purchase a brush roll that was an investment and would last me years. Georgia from The Glamorous Life recommended this Gorgeous Cosmetics roll to me and after a few emails back and forth and the help of the delightful Karla from the Gorgeous counter, the roll is mine. It’s a 23 piece professional roll and the brushes are made from sable. The brushes are light weight and the hair is ridiculously soft. I’m very pleased!

Another new addition to my kit was this rather large MAC haul that I ordered in from the states, using a parcel forwarding service, Parcel it on. Parcel it on were amazing and I definitely recommend using their services! Within the MAC haul are a few primers and setters, my favourite highlighter in the shade ‘Hush’, a powder and mascara.

Yesterday I put a post up that I ended up taking down. I put it up in a rush, because i felt guilty about not blogging in a while. I try not to over think my posts that much and I try to post on here as regularly as I can, but sometimes life just gets in the way. When I started blogging I didn’t want to be someone that apologises when the blog is left unattended for a few weeks… but you cant help but feel bad when you realise you haven’t looked at your blog in days and that you might just be letting people down.

If you are a blogger do you put pressure on yourself to post within a certain time frame? Or are you less stringent about your blogging? What about if you have favorite blogs you read regularly… do you get bored when there isn’t a new post every two days?

I think it’s all really interesting and personally I love it when my favorite bloggers upload every few days but at the end of the day I do have realistic expectations of these people!

Any who, as I said, I did do a post yesterday but I took it down as it was rushed and not how I wanted it to be. Instead I would like to show you all my apartment. I have been trapped in here for the last three days due to being sick and it was during this time that i realised im really happy with the space we have created and the pieces we have purchased in the last few years.

Our apartment is small, cosy, clean and white. S and I collected most our furniture from garage sales, vintage stores and IKEA, and we attempt to purchase furniture that will suit most rentals, as we don’t plan to buy for a while. Our place over looks lush green trees and is whisper quiet when you close the door. A new addition to the house is this Snow White wall mount. Ive had it since i was a child and the fine print states the picture was created in 1987, the year i was born.

It’s the 6th of December and its freezing cold here in Perth, because of this I am harbouring hope that Christmas day won’t be too hot. It’s a silly hope to have though as each year the temperature creeps up and we end up with a 35 degree (95 Fahrenheit) Christmas!

This year S and I decided to really get in the Christmas spirit. With school fees and unemployment looming, our holiday period was looking rather bleak. But now this beauty is up, it’s a bit brighter. To top off our tree we used S’s little plane ornament that he has had since he was a child. We both thought it was a nice sentimental touch.

For us Christmas is all about family, pretty summer dresses, swimming pools, huge cold lunches and a lot of alcohol.

Herdsman Lake.

Frolicking by the lake on a Saturday afternoon is one of my favourite things to do. Im so happy we have moved to a location that allows us to ride to our friends house (Hai Jess & Corey!), and then down to this beautiful spot. Im wearing a second hand Ralph Lauren sweater that i think some poor person accidently shrunk as it's an XL! Good for me though. Unfortunatly i lost the Wayfarers i was holding in the previous post. I left them on the shelves when i was food shopping and now they are long gone. Goodbye my old friends, i loved you so! These Ray Bans are ones i picked up in the states, and they will do me fine until i can replace my lost loves. I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

Yes, this is another work outfit. Kind of boring I know but that’s my life at the moment! It’s been very hot after work so I have either been scurrying into the house and not leaving or riding my bike in shorts and an oversized shirt. It’s hard to arrange an office outfit in this heat as it’s cold in the office yet hot in the afternoon so I tend to have about three cardigans hanging off my office chair just in case!

Do you like my shoes? They are from Urban Outfitters and I think they are super cute. If you would like a pair you can get them here, although they don’t have any in this colour any more. I recommend going up a half size as they pinch a little.

Sometimes I wish that I could throw on a pair of docs, wear lots of layers and have a tan, but since starting this blog I have developed a sense of self awareness and I have finally realised that I am not Abbey Lee or Jessica Hart. It was kind of a sad moment for me as I really do like a lot of items that are in trend at the moment. But to be frank, I don’t tan well, im short, and wearing boots in summer looks ridiculous on me. Since making these earth shattering observations I realised that I still haven’t found a personal style of my very own and because of this I tend to gravitate towards a new look every few weeks.

But enough is enough. I’ve decided that I need to try and stick to one look for a little longer than a month. So after doing some research I have been inspired by an old school friend of mine who is now a successful burlesque dancer with the Perth Troupe, Sugar Blue Burlesque. I spent all weekend watching clips of the troupe dance together and also on their own, displaying their individual flair and skill. The vintage style that these girls adapt vary from the 20’s right up to the 60’s, a very glamorous period!

After watching these confident women, I realised that this style was perfect for me this summer. Its classy, requires dressing up and the outfits also suit my figure. Now when I shop, I wont trawl through racks of tight floral dresses that will accentuate all the parts of my body I despise, I will instead visit Modcloth, Awoke on a whale heart and The Ginger Fox to find a classic frock that will last me years.

Happy Birthday.

Last weekend S and I drove down to visit my family who live in a small country town called York, which is about an hour and a half drive from Perth. It’s a nice break from the city, and even though Perth isn’t exactly bustling it feels good to not have any phone service, not use the internet and wear old farm clothes for a while!

While I was in York I was given a bag stuffed full of clothing that previously belonged to my mums, friends, mother. As you could imagine half the pieces dated back to the 50’s and some were even hand made. Picture my excitement when I dug into the bag and found not one, but four pairs of shorts! They are all high waisted, with intricate detailing and they fit like a treat. These green ones were my pick for the day and I can’t wait to show you the others.

After watching me cavort around in my shorts the family decided to trek into town for breakfast at the JAH- ROC Mill Gallery. JAH- ROC is an old flour mill which has been turned into an art gallery showcasing jewellery, wood furniture and art. It’s a beautiful building and when I lived in York I would often wander around the levels admiring the work; and now that my dad stocks his wood furniture at JAH-ROC I like the building even more! (The chair above is his)

My lovely weekend was complete when S surprised me with this darling rose ring he had purchased from the gallery. Hope you all had a good one!

It’s a Panda.

Above are some shots from last night’s adventure. It turns out our new apartment is walking distance to a favourite pub of ours, so we took refuge from the ridiculous heat and went for a drink and a wander. I think i was trying to grab the camera from S in one picture... we also found a Panda. Im spending this weekend having picnics with a friend, meeting up with Jessie from The Velvet Bow to discuss a Perth blogger meet up, and driving down to York to see my family.

Extra Extra!

I have never studied before, when i was 18 i chose to travel around Australia instead of hitting the books like the rest of my friends. I have spent years steadily working my way up the corporate ladder, only to realise at age 23 (and a half ) that i hate working in an office. Last week i quit my job as a Personal Assistant and I start my Diploma in Specialised Makeup services in January. Yes I'm going to be a makeup artist.

So as I said in the last post, its time to get thrifty! Be prepared to see repeated outfits over here on April Rose because this lady is pinching pennies to pay for school, makeup and other supplies. I'm super excited about my change in careers and I'm also incredibly scared. I will be working freelance which means i need to be disciplined with my money and my time, a skill i am still learning to perfect. As scared as i am I'm also proud of myself for doing this. I am finally letting myself work towards my 'dream job' that job that won't pay much but will make me happy.

Hopefully this time next year i can really live out that corny old saying...

"Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life."

Weekend Kits.

I recently went shopping for the first time since my New York trip, as S and I are on a tight budget at the moment and will be for at least another 6-7 months. Its all for a good cause but gosh it’s hard!

As you know ive been lusting after a pair of leather shorts for some time, but I can’t afford any thing over 100 dollars so that means I needed to find an alternative. I picked up these bad boys from a local chain store and after noticing a button was missing the sales assistance gave me a discount. It made my day and the shorts ended up costing twenty dollars!

Another item I have been searching high and low for is a bib necklace. All the necklaces I kept finding were covered in tacky jewels or were priced ridiculously high, so when I laid eyes on this one in William Topp, I had to have it. Bib necklaces seem to add that something extra to an otherwise plain outfit and I love how they could almost look like part of the shirt you choose to wear it with.

I’m pleased with both the items I picked up, as they are staple pieces that I know I will get a lot of use out of. I actually wore a different rendition of this outfit on Saturday as well, and I probably would have worn the pieces again today if I had my way. I suppose things need to be washed eventually…

If you live in Perth and have 2 dollars please head down to Santé Fe on Tuesdays for two dollar taco night. Im talking proper, stuffed to the brim, good tacos. For two dollars. Im slightly embarrassed to say I didn’t know about this wonder until last night.

This is what I wore to eat said tacos. When I was getting dressed I pretended I was French (even though I was going for Mexican) this is because in my mind all French women wear stripes and cropped pants. These are the only black jeans I own as I have a terrible jean body consisting of short legs and no ass, which means jeans dont fit me properly. Im cuffing them not only to achieve the allusion of French style but also because even after cutting them they are still too long. My shirt is an old Kmart concoction and the tie and white button down are second hand.

Saturday I didn’t leave the couch all day, until S told me he was taking me out for Thai and wine in an effort to bring me back to life. It worked and I feel inspired again! Halloween is kind of bittersweet for me, a few years ago at a zombie filled party I was picked up by a random guy and unceremoniously dropped on my face, resulting in a fractured jaw and a broken front tooth. I love Halloween and i personally think im super good at dressing up but I can’t help to think back to that night and sigh a little about my tooth.

Any who this Halloween S and I decided last minuet to throw together outfits and head out to a party at the Shred Tavern. It was a good night with lots of our friends popping up, Bee was there as Katy Perry, S went as Where’s Wally (we didn’t have a hat, cane or glasses so I drew them on with eyeliner!) and I went as a Witch/Vampire/Scary Doll or whatever you make of it, I wore lots of makeup with huge false lashes and some scary looking Mimco tights. Yes we have a framed picture of Katy Perry in our house. Its S's pride and joy.

Genius.

Let me introduce Bee. She is 25, nutty, cat obsessed, and a genius with scissors.

Stepping into Bee’s salon, Peggy Sues, was a very different hair experience for me. Walking through Last Chance Studios then through a kitchen and up a winding staircase (careful not to step on the sleeping kitty!) makes you feel as though you are visiting a friend, not a hairdresser which is always a good thing! Once seated and robed Bee and I have a chat about what I want and within 5 minuets of talking we both come to a decision... Mermaid hair*. Otherwise known as hair with lots of layers, swish and length, mermaid hair is something I have always longed for and Bee is just as excited as I am about achieving it.

She gets straight into the washing and cutting, (no messing around here) and a short while later I am a very happy lady with pretty mermaid hair. We decided not to redo my balayage as once the layers were cut in, the colour popped out any ways. This saved me from wrecking my hair with more dye and also saved my pennies! Bee even gave me a quick lesson on how to style my new do at home. Very nice.

S and i have been re watching Friends. This is probably the 5th time i have watched the whole series and his millionth. Whenever i tune in i always fall in love with Jennifer Aniston’s amazing hair. For me her hair ranks up there with Zoe Foster, Alexa Chung and Zooey Deschanel. Of course when she had that manky phase of super long extensions i wasn't a fan, but Rachel Green in Season Four? It doesn’t get any better than that.

The reason for all this hair perving is because I'm visiting Peggy Sues this Thursday for a cut. Peggy Sues is relatively new to Perth and was reviewed by Six Thousand this year, and has also been talked up in the Vogue Forums. The space is run by the delightful Bee, and i have heard nothing but great things about her salon. She recently cut S’s hair for only 20 bucks and he loved it. Wish me luck,ill show you all the end result this Friday!

Saturday night after eating Lasagna, my friends and I went out to the Bird for a few drinks. I wanted to feel casual and comfortable as the Bird is quite small so I wore my go to outfit, an American Apparel raglan and black heels. I own two if these tops and I will be getting some more, they really are a staple in my wardrobe and I even get use out of them in summer.

This blue Essie polish strangely goes with most of my outfits, probably because everything I wear is either grey or black. I was in Sussans on the weekend and I picked up two casual summer dresses, in grey and black... I can’t help myself!

Mmmm lasagna is one of my favorite foods. I usually make vegetarian lasagna but this weekend I whipped up a mince one for my friends. Here is a quick break down on what I put in my lasagna.

Sliced Eggplant and Zucchini which i cure for about an hour
Diced carrot/onion/garlic mixed with Italian herbs and tomatoes.
Home made Béchamel sauce with a pinch of nutmeg
Ricotta and one egg mixed together (this is my "secret" ingredient)

Star Jump For Joy.

Here are a few of my work and play outfits from this week. I don’t own many pairs of jeans but the ones I do own are super duper comfy… almost in a motherly way! I found these at GAP and they are perfect as they graze my ankle, something I usually have to have professionally done as I am very small in stature. My lipstick is Revlon Colour Burst in Coral.

The crazy wedges are a gift to me from Girl Friday who found them in a second hand store.
I wore them to work with my felt green skirt which is also second hand and a black T- shirt with studs on the shoulders. I included a picture of my hair whacking me in the face as this is how it behaves most of the time!! When it is natural this is how curly it gets… its bigger in real life too.

Lastly this is Mushy, telling me he is hungry and wants cuddles. Probably at the same time.

A few things that are floating my boat at the moment.

I received some of the final shots from my shoot with Haylie and Joel, this one is my favourite. I wish i could cuddle lambies all day long!

S and I purchased Laneway tickets this morning. Im looking forward to Les savy Fav, who apparently do insane live shows. The front man takes his clothes off and makes out with people in the crowd. YAY! I am also beyond excited for Foals; does any one remember the Skins episode which they played on? So good. I love their earlier sound from the Antidotes album, displaying the bands amazing Math Rock skilllllzzzz. The second album, Total Life Forever cemented my love and it has since grown. Dreamy sigh. Yeasayer just make me smile lots.

On Sunday I had the wonderful opportunity of creating the makeup for Little Gracie’s Autumn Winter Look Book. Joining S and I for the day was stylist extraordinaire Hannah McGrath, her lovely boyfriend and photographer Cameron Etchells, our stunning model Pamika Reynolds, and the designer for Little Gracie, Ebony Harding.

We trekked out to Araluen Botanical gardens for the day and created some wonderful looks. As the look book has not been released yet I cannot show you the clothing, but I can give you a sneak peek into the preparation of the day and the makeup that I created and the hair I assisted with. Fashion Fights Breast Cancer.

Little Gracie, jungle fever, amazingly cute girls and chanel cupcakes.

When you live in a small city like Perth it can be very easy to be dragged down amongst the small town haters that seem to frequent most bars, clubs and events. You know, those people that insist the show you are watching is sub par or the club you are at is "just not as good as the one in Melbourne".

Since starting this blog i have had the opportunity to explore alot more of Perth than i usually would and i can see that there is so much going on here, if you just look. Last night was a perfect example of this. We had the chance to view upcoming Western Australian labels, mingle with the designers and have a few drinks with some amazingly well dressed women. I felt proud to be in Perth and smugly thought... Suck on it haters.

Rain Rain Go Away.

Woe is me! We were rained out on Sunday so the shoot for Little Gracie has been postponed to next weekend. Even though I couldn’t do the makeup i still had a play around with the mulberry coloured lipstick i picked up from Rimmel. It’s a great shade (Bordeaux) and it has a good lasting power, I definitely recommend!

I have been battling a virus for the last week which has made me incredibly lethargic, I haven’t been able to leave the house and putting together and outfit is a struggle. As I hadn’t ventured outside in four days (I literally popped out to get food and some makeup, that’s it!) S decided that I should get some air, so we went down to our local beach and took some pictures of the sun set. During one of my outings I wore my black Sass and Bide rats and S’s Caliber shirt, its long and black, exactly the mood I was in!

Regular posting will ensue once I am fighting fit again. Oh and before I forget, the Westfield Insider finalists were announced today, I was disappointed to see no one from WA made it through, but good luck to those who were picked!

To celebrate the beautiful spring weather we were having today i wore a floral second hand dress that was passed down to me from a friend with my Ralph Lauren chambray shirt. Can you believe i got this shirt for $12 in the states! Ive worn it to death all ready and its going to be a life saver when its stinking hot in a few months.

When i was putting together my outfit today my mind kept going back to a comment that was left on one of my posts regarding Vintage clothing.. Le.Fanciulle I'm talking to you! It was mentioned in my last post that i could use vintage clothing to achieve any look i desire, something i actually do quiet often but i have never really discussed on here.

I realised i haven't worn much vintage on this blog since it started, but a few years ago I used to wear so much that i constantly had an air of old lady musk about me! I have a lot of pieces that i have thrashed over the years and this scarf is one of them. I found it in Midland at a store that is no longer there, a smelly woman used to run it and S and i discovered some of our best buys there. The scarf opens right up to be the same size as me and it has a beautiful oriental pattern on it.

Due to time constraints (Vintage stores in Perth are only open during the week and Saturday mornings!) and a change in style i don't op shop as much as i would like any more, but i still go back time and time again to my old favourites. I'm going to to give you all a look into my scarf collection soon, its monstrous!

I have included a sneak peak of what i will be doing this weekend coming... a hint for you all is it involves the label Little Gracie and Araluen Botanic Park!

Man oh man, if you are unfamiliar with Dar from Afoona-Pea then get on it! I haven't felt hair/outfit/life envy like this in a while. Dar's style is what I hope to one day achieve in my own wardrobe. Classic, beautiful pieces that can be worn time and time again.Unfortunately for the time being my funds won’t allow me to fill my wardrobe with floaty blouses, satchel bags and heels galore. A girl can dream though…

Another morning and another work outfit from me. I’m wearing S's H&M shirt and my favorite slacks. I found these in Portman’s last year for $30 and they fit like a dream. I love how they are high waisted and are cuffed around the ankle. Do you find it difficult to style outfits for work?

Back when I was a little shit and had an asymmetrical hair cut and wore LOTS of inappropriate clothing purchased mostly from second hand stores, I would have to buy a second wardrobe for work. Now that I have calmed down a tad and have normal hair I try and purchase pieces that I can wear on a daily basis and incorporate into my week day look. I also keep in mind a few “rules” when I get ready in the morning.

Throwing on a pair of heels with most outfits makes my look seem more formal.
Accessorize like a mad woman. A plain shirt and skirt can be dressed up with earrings or a scarf.
Plain white and black t shirts are a lifesaver and go great with lots of different cardigans, jackets and jewelry.
Straightening my hair and wearing it up makes me look more polished.
Wearing a blazer, belt and heels and sheer stockings with my favorite summer dress can turn it into a work piece. I do this with most my dresses.
Never wear any thing to short, sheer or tight.
For work I keep my eye makeup to a minimum. Instead I play up my lips or cheeks. Done up eyes seem to go down badly with my (male) boss.

Finally, I always stay true to my own personal style. When my work friends wear suits, I wear pants and brogues… you can always put your own spin to a simple outfit!

Good Morning Sunshine.

I don’t get to see my family very often, they live in the country and my sister attends a boarding school down south, a good 5 hours away! They are up in Perth for the next week though and I have had the chance to spend some quality time with my 13 year old brother and also with my mum. Mum loves spoiling S and I and yesterday when I got home there was a mountain of groceries on our kitchen bench, fresh fruit, pasta, cupcake mix and even coffee and a coffee plunger! It sounds like a weird present, but when you live on a tight budget little delights such as a fully stocked pantry are very exciting!

Today’s outfit post features my favourite mug from the second hand store and freshly brewed coffee, courtesy of Mother Rose. I’m wearing no makeup so excuse the tired face, skirt from Tokito – Myer, Raglan from American Apparel; Shoes are from Barneys and necklace from Marc Jacobs.

This long weekend went so fast! With the shoot on Saturday and the Royal Show on Monday I'm feeling rather exhausted today. I finally got around to wearing and photographing my Andrew Kuo Googley eye tee which I wore with a pair of worn in Hard Yakka shorts passed down to me from my dads mate… What a skank huh, these shorts are tiny!

I’m not a huge fan of the show, but S and I went along to support my sister Eliza who is competing in various events throughout the week for her agricultural school. The event we caught yesterday was wool classing, in which each student judges various fleeces and determines which fleece is the best quality. Eliza won the event which means she will be representing WA in Adelaide next year! I'm a very proud sister. Did you notice the love heart on the side of her cow? cute huh.

Applying makeup professionally is a dream of mine and this weekend i had a small glimpse into my would-be career. Haylie Cook is an aspiring model who organised a shoot for her portfolio at the cuddly animal farm, about 40 minutes from the CBD. I was invited along to apply the makeup, do the hair and assist with styling, an amazing opportunity for me! It was a super long day, with our team working into the night to perfect each shot. We had to work around rouge bulls attacking our equipment, lots of animal poo and squirmy lambs. Once the pictures have been edited i will show you all, but for now here is a look into the day. Thanks Haylie, Joel and Matt for a great experience!

Westfield Insider

I had my Westfield Insider interview today. I arrived and hour early as usual and had to sit in Inalloo waiting anxiously until registration opened. I ended up wearing a silk blouse that I found heavily discounted in Witchery with black harem pants. The shirt was such a good find, it has unusual material paneling up the arms and chains draping across my front. I had to go to work straight after which Is why I was dressed a tad more corporate than the other girls and im not sure if that worked against me or not?

The other ladies and gentle man (I only saw one guy!) at the interview looked dashing, it was wonderful to see the effort people made. I can’t remember the name of the little lady who is pictured above but she looked superb in her glasses and cuffed trousers.

My only gripe with the process was the interview panel; we only had time for a one on on with a single judge rather than meeting them all. I was looking forward to finally meeting Emma from Dropstich but missed out on the opportunity! The next step is to create a video entry and upload it onto the website. Once my application is up there I’ll let you all know so you can check it out… Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me!

Better late than never.

I love Gorman. To be honest I don’t actually OWN any pieces but I like looking and touching and admiring from afar.Much to my delight you can find Gorman at Annex 100 in the city, something I only realised on the weekend. What? Some times I’m slow of the mark!

Gorman describe them selves as “A fresh, modern womenswear label" which I feel sums them up perfectly. They use organic materials and design wonderful staples in neutral easy to wear colours. Their current collection of clogs are to die for and after having a peek at this season’s line I feel Gorman capture a style that I often attempt to achieve, something along the lines of Quirky yet Simple.

In light of the westfield auditions i have put myself under allot of scrutiny this week, something that isn't good for a girls self confidence! I am having trouble describing my "style" and in turn have realised that at 23, i still don't have a definitive style that i can call my own. Until i figure it all out ill just keep one foot in each trend until i find something that fits. Quarter life crisis? Perhaps..
